They Were There

They were there
But never saw them
Phantoms from the start.

Nearly bought a co-op
On Liberty Street
In seventy eight.
They were there.
Didn't see them.

Stayed at the Millenium
Faced the river
Walked right by
Down to Wall Street.
Didn't see them.

Went to the top
Observation
Windows restaurant
Saw the city
Saw the taxis.
Still didn't see them.

Saw them from Jersey
And from Brooklyn
Even from uptown
But never near.

They were there
Just couldn't see them.
An abstraction
Pointing skyward
Leading thought
Above, beyond.
