The American Physical Society, founded in 1899, celebrates its centennial in 1999.  It is publishing a photograph of Paul Bley in its
"A Century of Physics" Time Line Wall and Web Chart (1899-1999),
with the following caption:

"The first performance of a music synthesizer was made be pianist Paul Bley at Philaarmonic Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City on December 26, 1969.  Bley developed a proprietary interface that allowed real time performance on the music synthesizer."
